Darrin Hale:
A missing-persons investigation in late 2005 evolved into a brutal murder and dismemberment of a Gilbert man – allegedly at the hands of his wife and father-in-law.
Sharon Denise Hale, was arrested in April 2006 for the murder of her husband, Darrin Hale, at his home on the 800 block of S. Modine Lane in Gilbert.
Also arrested was Sharon Hale’s father, Clarence Moton, of Avondale.
Gilbert police say Moton fatally stabbed Darrin Hale at his daughter’s behest.
Family members told investigators Darrin Hale had been upset when he found out his wife refinanced their Gilbert home without his consent and hid money from him.
“Darrin was upset at Sharon for illegally refinancing his house and forging his name,” one officer wrote in his report.
A co-worker told investigators Darrin Hale entrusted him with “a copy of mortgage documents that Darrin said . . . he didn’t sign,” the report states. Darrin Hale also left behind a letter he wrote the mortgage company and a birthday card with his signature to compare with the forgery.
Darrin Hale’s legal adviser reported him missing Dec. 29, 2005, after he missed an appointment two weeks before, according to police reports. Regular contact with family members had also suddenly stopped.
Sharon Hale told police her husband was a “very considerate and giving person when he was not drinking” during their rocky relationship. She said Darrin Hale ultimately agreed to refinance the home, but he later threatened to say she forged the documents, the report states.
Police reports show the house was refinanced for $250,556.96. After the original mortgage was paid off and fees taken out, $18,006.40 was deposited into Sharon Hale’s checking account.
Three weeks before being reported missing, Darrin Hale obtained an order of protection from Gilbert Municipal Court, court documents state. In it, he alleged his wife followed him, cut him off while he was driving and threatened to kill him.
In an interview with police April 7, 2006, Moton said his daughter asked him to help her kill Darrin Hale. “Once at the house, he confronted Darrin and they began fighting,” police said.
During the fight in the laundry room, Moton told police he pulled a knife from his pocket and “stabbed Darrin once in the chest and once in the neck. Darrin then collapsed on the floor and died,” court documents state.
Sharon Hale and Moton wrapped Darrin Hale’s body in a rug, put him in the trunk of a car, drove to California, where Moton decapitated Darrin, cut off his hands and deposited the remains in different locations in the open desert, court documents and police reports state.
Moton later recanted the story and said he burned his son-in-law’s body and spread the ashes along State Road 87. He changed his story again, stating “he was high” and wanted an attorney, court documents state.
Police have never recovered Darrin Hale’s body, but arrested Moton and Sharon Hale in April 2006 after a Tucson man told police that he saw “meat and bone” on a saw Sharon asked him to destroy, along with an ax, a wedding ring, clothing and carpet, the report said.
At the time, Sharon Hale denied involvement with her husband’s death.
